There are still questions about to what degree non-public schools are required to engage in the state’s new reading initiative. Current guidance from the state would require state accredited non-public schools to produce a reading plan and administer the IREAD assessment. Choice (voucher) schools are also required to administer the IREAD. We have been told the remediation aspect of the program is suggested but not required. A central point of debate is whether the retention requirement for third graders not passing IREAD can be required of non-public schools. INPEA will keep schools informed as these discussion progress. A PowerPoint overview of the Reading Program can be found here.
